The 30 Hour Famine Was Both Fun and Successful! Over 20 youth joined chaperones Tracy and Craig Ryder, Carroll Brown, and Linda Williams for a marathon lock-in in the Youth Room on February 26/27. Thanks to Sandy Jamerson, Susan Epling, Kathy Johnson, Greta Morris, and Robin Cheek for preparing and serving a delicious meal at the end of the fast. An event sponsored by World Vision, youth learned about issues of world hunger and what we can do to about them, enjoyed a good time together, and raised over $2,000 to assist with hunger relief projects in Haiti and other locations. For example, World Vision was already in Chile the day after the recent earthquake, providing relief, so our funds were immediately put to good use. A benefit of this year’s Famine was that every dollar donated was multiplied by a factor of ten because of a matching grant. Thanks to everyone who supported the youth with your donations – the actual amount generated was over $20,000!

Mission Outreach – Habitat’s Collegiate Challenge WCF Circle #1 and Women on a Mission are providing breakfast foods for Habitat for Humanity’s Collegiate Challenge 2010. Fifty college students from Allegheny College, Kent School, the University of Chicago, and Ursinus College have forgone traditional spring break plans to travel to Lynchburg and build a house in partnership with our local Habitat for Humanity. They will be working on Joanne Keatts’ home at 203 Chambers Street during the weeks of March 7-12 and March 21-26, if you would like to drop by the site to welcome and encourage these college students. Thanks to the Women of Circle #1 and Women of a Mission for supporting these college students! You may also be interested to know that the offering received at last year’s Community Thanksgiving Service supports this mission outreach.
Thanks!
Thanks to the Fellowship Team (Lynda Russell, Hattie Bradshaw and Ann Weber) for organizing the terrific Congregational Dinner on March 3! Thanks to Gwynn Ramsey for his fine storytelling and music! And thanks to the sixty-five people who brought a dish and shared a fun evening together!
Dear Women on a Mission,
Thank you so much for providing supper for Group Night on Monday evening at Kids’ Haven. As I know you saw, the meal is an integral part of our program, as it is “at table” that many of the friendships, which facilitate the “serious business” that follows, are formed. We are so thankful that so many groups from throughout our community understand how the meal fits into the program and serve us so loyally. Aside from the program dimensions of supper together, I suspect that for some of families our MealMakers provide the most nutritious and balanced meals our families eat.
On behalf of our board, our volunteers, and – most importantly – the grieving families in our care, I thank you for the loving enthusiasm you offer to support our efforts to provide a safe and caring place to travel grief’s journey.
Most Sincerely,
Molly Roper Jenkins,
Kids’ Haven Executive Director

In honor of St. Patrick’s Day
Paddy was driving down the street in a sweat because he had an important meeting and couldn’t find a parking place. Looking up to heaven, he said, “Lord, take pity on me. If you find me a parking place, I will go to church every Sunday for the rest of my life and give up me Irish Whiskey.” Miraculously, a parking space opened before him. Paddy looked up again and said, “Never mind, Lord, I found one myself.”
An Irish priest is driving down to New York and gets stopped for speeding in Connecticut. The state trooper smells alcohol on the priest’s breath and then sees an empty wine bottle on the floor of the car. He says, “Sir, have you been drinking?” “Just water,” says the priest. The trooper asks, “Then why do I smell wine?” The priest looks at the bottle and says, “Good Lord! He’s done it again!” (If you don’t catch the point, read John 2:1-11:)
Walking into the bar, Mike said to Charlie the bartender, “Pour me a stiff one. I just had a fight with the little woman.” “Oh yeah?” said Charlie. “And how did this one end?” “When it was over,” Mike replied, “She came to me on her hands and knees.” “Really?” said Charlie, “Now that’s a switch! What did she say?” She said, “Come out from under that bed, you little chicken.”
